Memorial Day 2016 Azusa GMR

rideIconIt’s Memorial Day weekend again and I had a day off work so I decided kind of last minute to get up to Crystal Lake now that the road is fixed.  For those of you who follow the site or know me, you probably know that between work and a busy family life, I haven’t hardly been on my bike at all other than commuting.  It sucks.  Riding is freeing.  No matter how much bullshit is going on in your life, you can’t think about that stuff when you’re on a bike or you end up in a bad situation.  I was super rusty today since I haven’t really been on anything other than superslab the last almost three months.  I took it easy, but decided to mix it up a little and went up Azusa to the Cafe, then back down, across East Fork, and up and over Glendora Mountain Road.

Glendora Mtn Road Feb 8

rideIconI had a day off work so I decided to take a spin up to GMR.  I’d heard the road up to Crystal Lake was damaged and closed so I wanted to see what was going on.  GMR is so close, it’s a quick getaway with minimal freeway time and I’m not so far out in the hinterland if something goes bad.  After my electrical problem on ACH a while back I’m a little hesitant to head out that far again, especially alone.

It’s been a while – GMR Oct 16

rideIconWith the heat this summer not letting up and a busy kids’ schedule, it’s been hard to find time to get out for a pleasure ride.  I commute every day on the bike, but it’s not the same as riding for the essential joy of riding.  I decided to take a random day off in October because there were no other holidays I’d get off and today was the day.  I haven’t ridden a curvy road in months so I took it real easy and just enjoyed the day.

Memorial Day GMR

rideIconI took a couple vacation days over Memorial Day weekend and ended it by hitting GMR, aka Glendora Mountain Road.  I’ve been up there many times, and lately been going more due to its proximity to home.  It’s a darn good road that’s not usually busy off-peak.  Jon had never been, surprisingly, so that sealed the deal.  I’m by no means an expert at GMR, far from it, but I know enough to take someone who has never been.

April 11 – GMR

rideIconDecided to take a ride up GMR, Glendora Mountain Road, and see what it looked like.  Lately someone has been pouring oil on the road in an attempt to keep bikers away, so I’ve been wary of going up there.  I didn’t find any fresh oil today, but I did see a couple sports that where oil had been poured and not cleaned up by Cal Trans, small spills that were at least a couple days old.  Continue reading

GMR GRR St Patrick’s Day 2015

rideIconAs hesitant as I was to ride GMR after all the shenanigans going on up there lately, I wanted to get a shorter ride in before I met the wife for lunch on St Patrick’s Day.  We’ve made it a small tradition to have lunch, just the two of us, at our local.  She always gets corned beef and cabbage, and I always get a corned beef sandwich.  I took off soon as the kids were off to school and hit the hill early before most people were out of school or bed. Crystal Lake Nov 12

rideIconAfter last month’s debacle on ACH, I decided to ride up to Crystal Lake today.  I’d originally planned yesterday, but schedules changed and it’s a good thing too:  Crystal Lake Cafe is closed on Tuesday.  I mean not that it would’ve ruined the day, but there’s something fun about hitting the little cafe for whatever and chilling on the patio with a drink. No, Dale, I didn’t see the cat.

First Day of School – GMR

rideIconMy kids had their first day of school today, so after dropping them off I celebrated by hitting GMR and getting lunch with my girl at our local.  The weather was a little off, not hot or anything, just a hazy day, but otherwise it was a great day on the mountain.  Pics below the fold.

June 21 Saturday Fun Day

rideIconHad a great moto-day today.  Wife and kids are out of town so I’m pretending to be a bachelor all weekend.  So fun.  No pressure, no commitments, just riding.  Arranged with my buddy Dan to ride GMR and Crystal Lake, then go to a dealer event.  Ended up cruising the beach, getting BBQ and beers at my local with a good friend.  Tough to complain about this life.
